Worship

Worship.  When we think of worship, our minds might immediately go to what we do on Sundays and Wednesdays when we gather together.  Please do not discount that, but, also, please do not limit worship to just that.  Often times I hear the question, “what style of worship do you have at your church”?  While I know what is intended by the question, I don’t know what that means from a biblical perspective.  Worship is not just something that we do, it is who we are.  One verse that comes to mind is what Jesus is recorded as saying, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship Him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).  Pertaining to the “in spirit and in truth” part of this verse, commentator John Trapp states, “As opposed to formality and hypocrisy”.  When we do what is right, we are worshipping the Lord.  When we love one another as God has commanded, we are worshipping the Lord.  When we forgive one another for Christ’s sake, we are worshipping the Lord.  But all of this, including what we do when we gather together, must come from a great desire from within – worshipping in spirit, and with a focus on God’s revealed truth.  This leads me to our reading from Psalms this morning.  “Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness” (Psalm 29:2).  Really meditate upon His Word this morning.  That psalm goes on to repeat the phrase, “the voice of the Lord”.  The voice of the Lord does mighty things that are described in that psalm.  The creation account in Genesis reveals that things that were not, came into existence by the voice of the Lord.  He simply spoke, and it was.  If there is that much power just in the voice of the Lord, and there is, just think about what God can do.  And, if God can do things greater than we could even think or imagine, and He can, isn’t it a wonder that He cares for you specifically?  Isn’t it amazing that He gave His Son for you so that You might be cleansed from your sins?  Truly, if we stop and just think upon these things for a short while, we will begin to ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name.  This truth is what leads to worship!
