Ready To Die

Monday January 15, 2024
Ready to die.  Are there things that you read in the Old Testament that strike you as being familiar or relatable to the New Testament?  When Jacob, or Israel has his name was changed, saw his son Joseph, he said, “I’m ready to die now because I have seen your face and you are still alive” (Genesis 46:30).  When I read that, I immediately thought of the just and devout Simeon from the New Testament.  The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not see death until he had seen the Lord’s Christ.  When Joseph and Mary brought the baby Jesus to the temple, Simeon said, “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation” (Luke 2:29-30).  In both cases, it is as if these men had witnessed an accomplished work of God in their lives, and thus, allowed them the ability to be at peace with death.  Now, Jacob (Israel), did not die right away.  He lived the remainder of his days in Egypt, but the reuniting with his son Joseph was a pivotal moment.
