For Their Own Good

For their own good.  As we read through all the laws God sets forth for the Israelites, one realizes how detailed some of this becomes.  This communicates just how serious uncleanness is before God.  The priests had a significant role in teaching the people, in carrying out certain inspections when circumstances arose, and for cleansing and declaring clean.  Consider this verse, “You must keep the Israelites from their uncleanness so that they do not die by defiling my tabernacle” (Leviticus 15:31).  Several points can be made from this one verse.  First, defiling God’s tabernacle was a serious offense and the ultimate offense of the uncleanness. Second, it was the leaders, priests, responsibility in keeping the Israelites from their uncleanness.  Teaching and carrying out God’s instructions as it pertains to uncleanness was of the highest importance.  Thirdly, and finally, all of this was for the good of the people.  Allowing them to continue, unchecked, would have resulted in their death (i.e. “so that they do not ide”).  A strict priest would have been a good priest because all of this was for their own good.
