A Faithful Work

A faithful work.  We are probably familiar with the account of Moses and the events leading up to his birth and his life.  The king of Egypt, a new king who did not know Joseph, noticed that the Israelites living in Egypt had become more numerous and more powerful than the Egyptian people (Exodus 1:9).  He set taskmasters over them and began to oppress them greatly.  But the more he oppressed, the more they multiplied (v.12).  So, he decided to reduce the population by killing the male babies.  He instructed the midwives to carry out this plan, and if the child being born was a son, they were to kill them (v.16).  These Hebrew midwives, however, would not participate in this plan because they feared God.  I believe it was the repetition, though that stood out to me about these midwives.  We read, “The midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had told them, they let the boys live” (v.17).  We then read, “So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied and became very numerous” (v.20).  Finally, we read, “Since the midwives feared God, he gave them families” (v.21).  Outside of a couple of mentions in Genesis, I can recall the position of midwife being referenced again in Scripture.  It was certainly not a position of notoriety.  It doesn’t matter what position we have.  It only matters that we are faithful in the position we are in.  God will bless a faithful work.
