My Deliverer

My Deliverer.  David penned the psalm we read today.  David have fled because of the rage of Saul to the land of the Philistines.  However, David feared the king of the Philistines, Abimelech, because he knew David.  David acted like a madman so that Abimelech would not treat him like a spy.  Despite this, God delivered David from this situation.  The psalm is David’s response to this deliverance.  He begins by saying he will bless the Lord at all times (Psalm 34:1).  Then he said “I will boast in the Lord; the humble will hear and be glad” (v.2).  In the first verse, David is praising the Lord; in the second verse, David is boasting in the Lord to others.  This seems to be contagious because the third verse calls upon others to join in the praising of the Lord.  It reads, “Proclaim the Lord’s greatness with me; let us exalt his name together” (v.3).  Matthew Henry commentates, “We cannot make God greater or higher than he is; but if we adore him as infinitely great, and higher than the highest, he is pleased to reckon this magnifying and exalting him. This we must do together. God's praises sound best in concert, for so we praise him as the angels do in heaven. Those that share in God's favour, as all the saints do, should concur in his praises”.  This should be a primary focus of our gatherings as a church.  How has God delivered you?  Have you thanked Him?  Have you boasted about what the Lord has done? When we come together, let’s exalt the name of the Lord together!
