Falling From Greatness

Falling from greatness.  As we read about Moses and leading the Israelites to the Promised Land, it is clear that their greatness was because of God.  God communicates to them the importance of His commands and statutes, and the importance of their obedience to them.  Moses tells the people that he taught them statutes and ordinances as the Lord had commanded him, so that they would follow them in the land Promised Land they were about to enter (Deuteronomy 4:5).  Again, he calls them to carefully follow them because that will show their wisdom and understanding in the eyes of the other nations (v.6).   And when these other nations hear about these statutes, they will say, “This great nation is indeed a wise and understanding people” (v.6).  The law and commands of God are precious and a source of strength.  Obedience to them will demonstrate wisdom and greatness to others.  On one hand, I mourn for our country.  Please do not mistake that statement.  The United States is not a promised people, like the nation of Israel was in the Old Testament.  However, we were once a people founded upon godly rules and adherence to those rules was part of our strength.  That is quickly slipping and being replace, and the result is, and will continue to be if unchanged, chaos and destruction. On the other hand is the church, a promised people.  While a nation might fall and collapse, the church does not have to follow suit.  We must continue to stand, not on our righteousness, but on the righteousness of Christ.  We are saved by grace through faith, and it is by faith that we continue to walk in obedience…for our God is good!
