The Heart of a King

Wednesday February 28, 2024
The heart of a king.  Our government is not a monarchy, but we do have elected officials that carry out the work of the government.  So, for this post, let’s think generally about application for elected, political leaders.  These verses stood out: “When he is seated on his royal throne, he is to write a copy of this instruction for himself on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests.  It is to remain with him, and he is to read from it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, to observe all the words of this instruction, and to do these statues.  Then his heart will not be exalted above his countrymen” (Deuteronomy 17:18-20). Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown commentary states, “The original scroll of the ancient Scriptures was deposited in the sanctuary under the strict custody of the priests. Each monarch, on his accession, was to be furnished with a true and faithful copy, which he was to keep constantly beside him, and daily peruse it, that his character and sentiments being cast into its sanctifying mould, he might discharge his royal functions in the spirit of faith and piety, of humility and a love or righteousness.”  Think about what a country we would have, if our leaders would practice this.  Unfortunately, our leaders have gone from taking an oath on the Word of God, which is not enough in that one must read and practice the Word of God, to taking oaths on ordinary books, some of which are vile.  We must pray for godly leaders to have a heart for God and for the people they serve.
