A Deceptive Desire

Saturday March 30, 2024
A deceptive desire.  There are times that the things that we thing we desperately want are the only things that matter.  However, once we receive them, they do not bring the satisfaction that we thought they might.  When Amnon had a desire to be with his sister Tamar, he was literally heart sick (2 Samuel 13:2).  Amnon had a friend named Jonadab, a nephew to David, and he was a very shrewd man (v.3).  Jonadab devised a scheme for Amnon to trick Tamar into being alone with him.  Amnon carried this out, and forced himself on his sister.  This was a disgrace to Tamar and to all of Israel.  Immediately after this occurred, we read, “So Amnon hated Tamar with such intensity that the hatred he hated her with was greater than the love he had loved her with” (v.15).  We must be careful about the things we desire.  If it requires deception in order to obtain them, then this is likely not from God.  This can be true of materialism, those things we think we want, we might even go as far to think we have need of them.  This can also be true for relationships.  Whatever the case may be, deceptive gains will ultimately result in great losses.
