Knowing God

Knowing God.  As I read Job this morning, there is a series of questions that God asks Job.  These questions are designed to humble Job’s position because he had become increasingly bold in his speech about his own righteousness and how God had wronged (Job 19:6).  The questions asked in our reading today are about what we would call nature.  For example, “Where is the road to the home of light?  Do you know where darkness lives, so you can lead it back to its border?” and “Have you entered the place where the snow is stored?  Or have you seen the storehouses of hail, which I hold in reserve for times of trouble, for the day of warfare and battle?” (Job 38:19-24).  The response to these questions is not recorded because they are rhetorical questions.  Of course Job, or any man, knows these things that only God knows.  We have learned a lot about science over the years.  There are some today that think we have learned so much about the weather, for example, that it can be somewhat controlled.  There are discussions, and I believe even actions being taken on those discussions, about controlling weather patterns and even creating certain conditions to bring about certain weather.  So, those individuals today might respond to these series of questions, yes, we do know these things.  It is a dangerous thing when man begins to think he knows as much as God.  However, it is a wonderful and peaceful thing to know the God Who knows all things.  Let us spend our time in effort in knowing Him, not trying to know as much as Him (for that is impossible).
